To qualify as a 'little gem', a film has to score on at least some of these criteria:

it must have been undeservedly overlooked or even damned at the time of release

there should be imaginative treatment of themes, characters or issues

some or all of: good performances, dialogue, photography, direction, plot, music
there should be wit and humour -which doesn't rule out slapstick!
the actors and/or director may well have been underrated
